Today's Handicap predictions — European handicap tips.
Handicap betting gives one team a virtual goal advantage or disadvantage before kick-off to level the playing field between mismatched sides and generate better odds on the stronger team. On this page, we publish European Handicap predictions — where whole number lines (−1, +1, +2) are applied to the final score and three outcomes remain possible: a home win, draw or away win on the adjusted scoreline. A draw on the adjusted score is a losing outcome in European Handicap, unlike Asian Handicap where it results in a refund.
How European Handicap works
In European Handicap, a virtual goal adjustment is applied to the final score before settlement. A −1 handicap on Arsenal means one goal is subtracted from their score: if Arsenal win 2-0, the adjusted score is 1-0 and the bet wins; if they win 1-0, the adjusted score is 0-0 (a draw) and the bet loses. A +1 handicap on Everton means one goal is added to their score: if Everton lose 0-1, the adjusted score is 1-1 (a draw) and the bet loses; if they lose 0-2, the adjusted score is 1-2 and the bet loses; if they draw 0-0, the adjusted score is 1-0 and the bet wins. The key rule: the draw on the adjusted score is always a losing outcome in European Handicap.
European Handicap vs Asian Handicap — key difference
The critical difference between European and Asian Handicap is what happens when the adjusted score is exactly level. In European Handicap, a draw on the adjusted score is a losing outcome — there are always three possible results. In Asian Handicap, the lines use half or quarter goals (e.g. −1.5, +0.75) to eliminate the possibility of an adjusted draw, so stakes are refunded or split when the result is exactly on the line. Asian Handicap is generally considered the more precise market, but European Handicap is more widely available and easier to understand as a starting point for handicap betting.
When to use negative vs positive handicap picks
Negative handicap picks (−1, −2) are used when we expect a team to win convincingly — not just win, but win by a margin that covers the line. The key question is not just "will this team win?" but "will they win by enough?" Positive handicap picks (+1, +2) are used when we back a weaker team to either win, draw, or limit the margin of defeat within the handicap. A +1 pick on an away side survives a 1-goal defeat — it's a more protected position than a straight match winner on the favourite. We use positive handicap picks when we see value in a team that the market underestimates defensively.
